Cory Watson Attorneys, a nationally recognized environmental litigation and personal injury law firm with offices in Birmingham, Memphis, and Nashville, continues to lead the charge in holding chemical manufacturers and industrial users accountable for widespread PFAS contamination. The firm has filed a new federal lawsuit in Georgia that targets major corporations for polluting the Conasauga River, a vital waterway in the southeastern United States, with “forever chemicals.”
PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic acid) and PFOS (Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid) are part of the chemical family ‘PFAS’ (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). This class of synthetic chemicals is linked to serious health risks, including cancer, immune dysfunction, and reproductive harm. Despite knowing the dangers, manufacturers have continued to make and sell PFAS-containing products to industrial users for decades, leaving communities downstream to bear the long-term consequences.
This latest lawsuit adds to Cory Watson’s growing portfolio of PFAS-related environmental and product liability litigation, having previously represented various municipalities, businesses, and individuals while securing victories against corporate giants nationwide. According to the complaint, Georgia-based carpet manufacturers used tens of millions of pounds of PFAS fluorochemicals to make soil and stain-resistant carpet. Excess PFAS chemicals were discharged to a public treatment system that could not remove it, resulting in pollution run-off into the Conasauga River.
“While the cost to remediate the PFAS contamination may be expensive for these polluting industries, the societal cost of having toxic drinking water, rivers, lakes, farmland, and wildlife is enormous,” said Ryan Lutz, principal attorney at Cory Watson Attorneys. “Those responsible should pay to clean up the mess they made.” For more information on the firm’s previous and ongoing PFAS litigation efforts, please visit www.corywatson.com.
