New York City officials report 10 deaths and over 100 infected in the South Bronx Legionnaires’ disease outbreak that is now being called the city’s worst ever. According to Fox 5 New York News, Legionella bacterium has been found in five cooling towers in the area.
The New York City Health Department has ordered that all buildings with cooling towers be tested for the Legionella bacteria during the next two weeks, and if the Legionnaires’ disease-causing bacterium is detected, the tower must be decontaminated. Failure to comply with these orders will result in misdemeanor charges.
