Dangerous Health Risks Linked to JUUL E-Cigarettes
E-cigarette use is now an epidemic, exposing an entire generation to addiction and nicotine-related illness.
A new generation of nicotine addicts has erupted through aggressive social media campaigns, a misleading product design, and other business strategies that target minors and young adults.
As JUUL e-cigarettes have gained popularity and researchers have begun studying their long-term effects, they’ve found evidence linking vaping to potential dangers to the heart, respiratory system, and brain — suggesting that, regardless of JUUL’s claimed mission to help adult smokers quit, e-cigarette use can lead younger people to take up smoking.
The e-cigarette industry markets their products as a “safer alternative” to smoking conventional tobacco cigarettes. However, for the hundreds of people injured and hospitalized by the JUUL e-cigarettes, these devices turned out to be anything but safe. The FDA is investigating a multi-state outbreak of lung disease associated with e-cigarettes, with over 380 confirmed cases of vaping-related illness and seven deaths across the U.S.
JUUL Seizure Risks and Deceptive Marketing Tactics
The FDA began notifying the public in April 2019 that some people, “especially youth and young adults” are reporting seizures following vape device use. Seizures or convulsions are known potential side effects of nicotine poisoning.
In July 2019, the FDA announced that it would be cracking down not only on illegal sales of e-cigarettes to minors, but also the “kid-friendly marketing and appeal of these products” as “we see clear signs that youth use of electronic cigarettes has reached an epidemic proportion.”
In September 2019, the FDA issued a warning letter to JUUL for wrongfully advertising its nicotine pods and vaping products as a “safer alternative” to cigarettes.
“JUUL has ignored the law, and very concerningly, has made some of these statements in school to our nation’s youth,” Acting FDA Commissioner Ned Sharpless said in a statement.
