What is a DockATot Infant Lounger?
The DockATot is a popular baby lounger designed in Stockholm, Sweden, and distributed worldwide. The lounger is described as a multi-functional lounging, playing, and snuggling dock for babies and toddlers from 0-36 months old.
Are DockATot Infant Loungers Safe?
DockATot Deluxe+ loungers are not safe for babies to sleep in.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) determined the DockATot Deluxe+ Dock was unsafe for infant sleep because it is entirely flat without a stand, is not at least 7.5 inches tall on its sides, and has padded sides that pose an asphyxiation risk – all non-compliant under the Infant Sleep Product Rule which took effect in June 2022.
If a baby manages to roll over from their back to their side or stomach, it could take only a couple minutes for the baby to suffocate and prove fatal. Even if the infant is too young to roll over, just turning their head to the side can cause suffocation if their face is pressed against the side of the DockATot.
In November 2022, the CPSC urged all who owned a DockATot Deluxe+ Dock to immediately discontinue its use.
According to the CPSC, “the best place for a baby to sleep is on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet, or play yard. Parents and caregivers should never add blankets, pillows, padded crib bumpers, or other items to an infant’s sleeping environment. Babies should always be placed to sleep on their backs.”
Infant Deaths After Being Placed in a DockATot Lounger
Three infants have died after being placed in a DockATot product.
- In July 2022, a 1-month-old suffocated in a DockATot.
- In June 2022, a 6-month-old died using a DockATot on a hard surface while swaddled.
- In December 2020, a 2-month-old died in a DockATot placed in a Pack ‘n Play.
What Other Infant Loungers Are Unsafe?
The DockATot Deluxe+ Lounger is not the only infant sleeper that has proven unsafe for use.
In 2021, the Boppy Company issued a recall on 3.3 million of its newborn following eight infant deaths between December 2015 and June 2020.
In 2019, Fisher Price recalled 4.7 million of its Rock N’ Play Sleepers due to suffocation risks, causing 30 infant deaths.
Parents should regularly review the list of child and infant product recalls to ensure dangerous toys or products are not in your home.
