Leachco Baby Loungers
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning consumers of infant lounger recalls from Leachco Inc. and Boppy products following reports of infants who suffocated while sleeping in the loungers. Podster, Podster Plush, Bummzie and Podster Playtime (the “Podsters”) are all among the products that consumers should immediately stop using, according to the CPSC.
The two infants – aged 4-months-old and 17-days-old – tragically suffocated inside the loungers after a shift in position caused their noses and mouths to be obstructed by the Podster or another object inside.
The CPSC has been adamant about the dangers of infants sleeping in non-firm, non-flat loungers for decades. Cushioning or soft padding in loungers can obstruct babies’ ability to breathe, so it’s best for parents to utilize a crib with a firm or flat surface, a bassinet, or a play yard for their infant.
“Infant loungers like Podsters are not safe for sleep,” the CPSC report states.
They also added that babies should always be placed on their back to sleep, only using a fitted sheet and never with other padding, pillows, padded crip bumpers, or blankets that could cause suffocation.
THE BOPPY COMPANY BABY LOUNGER RECALL
In September, The Boppy Company recalled 3.3 million of its popular Original, Preferred, and Pottery Barn Kids Newborn Loungers following eight infant deaths between December 2015 and June 2020.
Babies who were placed in the lounger face up, on their sides, or on their stomach were later found suffocated on their sides or stomachs. According to the CSPC’s report on the Boppy Loungers, infants can suffocate even if they are initially placed in a safe sleeping position by rolling or moving into a position that obstructs breathing, or if they roll off the lounger onto an external surface bedding that obstructs breathing.

BABY PRODUCT RECALLS FROM 2019-2022
This is the latest in a recent string of baby products with alleged fatal consequences over recent years. In addition to the Baby Boppy Lounger recall in September 2021, parents should be aware about the following recalls:
- Fisher-Price recalled 4.7M of its Rock N’ Play Sleepers in 2019 due to suffocation risks causing 30 infant deaths.
- Fisher-Price again recalled 71,000 of its Ultra-Lite Day & Night Play Yard with inclined sleepers in 2019 due to the similar suffocation risks associated with inclined sleepers.
- Graco recalled 5M of its strollers due to finger injury and amputation risks caused reported injuries to 11 babies.
